The Seattle City School District has filed an unprecedented lawsuit in which blame big tech companies for poisoning young people with social media addiction, saying that schools cannot fulfil their educational mission while students suffer from anxiety, depression and other psychological problems.
The lawsuit, filed in federal court in Seattle late Friday night, says ByteDance, the owner of Alphabet, Meta Platforms, Snap and TikTok, is responsible for young people becoming addicted to their platforms, and caused them to have a mental health crisis. The district includes more than 100 schools and serves around 50,000 children.
The lawsuit is believed to be the first of its kind in the United States brought by a school district, after dozens of families filed similar lawsuits last year, the newspaper reports.
