Is the electric car battery factory good for Debrecen or Hungary in general? It depends!

The former Rector of the University of Debrecen (DE) (István Fábián): 'Hungary will be a battery power! Is it worth it?" was attended by a full house (about 200 people) at the MTA Debrecen Academic Committee's headquarters on 11 April 2023.

He said that there were a lot of misconceptions, misinformation and misinformation on the subject, but he based his presentation on reliable international literature and official statements. In summary, the following points emerged from the chemistry professor's presentation.

The chemistry professor said that it is predicted that half of all passenger cars sold will be electric by 2030.

The scientist stressed that an electric car cannot be greener than the technology used to generate the electricity. In Europe, he said, only a fraction of energy use is covered by renewable energy, and in Hungary a much smaller proportion.

Some summary thoughts on the topic of the presentation are:

Consequently, it would be worthwhile for the government of the day to support renewable energy in every way possible to make Hungarian electric car use as green as possible!

It is only worth letting a factory into our country that:

  • It will use the latest, most environmentally friendly technology. In the way that will most reduce your ecological footprint.
  • It does not release water into the air, in the form of vapour, unpurified. It pays extra tax on the water used.
  • Nothing harmful comes out of the factory!
  • Commit to producing the least polluting battery composition every time. As technology improves, it will move to a better manufacturing solution in a short time.
  • You are not building the factory on farmland. They don't ship the soil abroad.
  • Undertake ongoing monitoring. Inspections are carried out by inspection offices that the Hungarian public trusts.
  • A deposit is made for any excessively high penalty. It undertakes to suspend its operations immediately if it makes a mistake of that magnitude, even before litigation.
  • The factory generates its own energy needs, using renewable energy (solar, wind). The land is designed in such a way that it does not negatively affect food production, but may even help it.
  • Industrial waste is disposed of outside our country.
  • It takes maximum care of the training of its workers.

Is the factory planned in Debrecen like this? Not even close at the moment. Is this how it will start? The intention will be seen.

Additional comment, individual opinion:

Could hydrogen propulsion be the future?
Certainly not for passenger cars. The by-product of hydrogen propulsion is water. The 'export-import' of water for hydrogen propulsion also threatens to be an ecological disaster. In the context of freight transport, an alternative might be good - truck, lorry, ship, plane. Especially the last two.
